Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson are supposed to be fighting for the UFC light heavyweight title in their first fight in over five years. Jones and Gustafsson had one of the greatest fights in UFC history in September of 2013 and fans are thrilled that the two are going back into the octagon together to try and beat each other once again. UFC 232 will be featuring Gustafsson vs. Jones as the premier fight of the night and it is taking place on December 29th in Las Vegas at the T-Mobile Arena. There are some questions now on whether Jones and Gustafsson will be fighting for the light heavyweight title now that Daniel Cormier has objected to giving up his title.
Daniel Cormier originally agreed that he would vacate that light heavyweight title and that he understood why UFC wanted to take away his title so that Jones and Gustafsson can fight for it. Cormier wants to fight the winner of Jones and Gustafsson but now he is unsure that he will be giving up the title in the first place if things do not go as planned in his bout on November 3rd against Derrick Lewis.
“If I lose to Derrick, then who is to say I don’t go, ‘Hey, I’m gonna go defend my light heavyweight title. Now you can’t take it,’” Cormier told the combat sports media (via MMA Fighting). “Maybe that adds a whole other part to the equation. You can’t take both of my belts if I lost that one. Right? So do I really have that much to lose if I have a second one? Look at it like that.”
“I am the light heavyweight champion until [Jones and Gustafsson] fight,” Cormier said. “So if the light heavyweight champion loses his heavyweight title and goes, ‘Wait I’m willing to defend my belt,’ now we have some conversations to have.”
Dana White has yet to comment on Cormier’s newest comments about the potential that Cormier may not give up his light heavyweight title. Most experts and fans agree that White will force Cormier to vacate the light heavyweight title for the Jones vs Gustafsson bout no matter what happens in the Cormier vs Lewis fight. Cormier has to realize that the UFC has to worry about other fights and continuing to drive viewers to their biggest fights and making UFC 232 a title fight will increase the stakes for the fight as well as the viewers. Fans want to see a title fight and they want the winner of Jones vs Gustafsson to take home the light heavyweight title.
Most experts believe that Cormier will be able to beat Lewis handily on November 3rd. But, experts thought the same thing during the original Jones vs Gustafsson fight where Gustafsson became the first fighter in UFC history to take down Jones in the octagon. Cormier will have to watch out and make sure that he fights well to defend his heavyweight title. Cormier will be slated to take on Brock Lesnar in a heavyweight showdown at the beginning of 2019 if he defeats Derrick in the octagon.
The Jones vs Gustafsson fight will bring the best of the UFC out for the night and fans all around the world are excited to watch Jones and Gustafsson hopefully fight for the UFC light heavyweight title. Dana White will ensure that UFC 232 will be a title fight regardless if Cormier wants to give up his light heavyweight title. Cormier has to be a team player and realize that UFC as a whole will be better off if he vacates the title and allows Jones and Gustafsson to fight for it. Jones and Gustafsson having the title will allow UFC to create even more great fights after UFC 232 and Cormier may end up fighting the winner of the fight in 2019. Gustafsson and Jones want to be fighting for the title on December 29th and more likely than not, they will be.
